Ex-soldier behind Papua New Guinea mutiny arrested (AP)

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea ? A retired colonel who attempted to take over Papua New Guinea's military and ordered the prime minister to step down has been arrested.

Police spokesman Dominic Kakas said Yaura Sasa was arrested Saturday night in a suburb of Port Moresby, the capital. He said Sunday that Sasa had yet to be charged with a crime.

Sasa led a small group of soldiers in a mutiny Thursday in which the military's top commander was briefly held under house arrest. The mutiny was part of a power struggle in which Prime Minister Peter O'Neill and former Prime Minister Michael Somare claim to be the rightful leader of the South Pacific nation.

Sasa demanded that O'Neill step down within a week to make way for Somare, who appointed Sasa defense chief after being removed from office.

Parliament replaced Somare with O'Neill in August while Somare was getting medical treatment outside the country. Papua New Guinea's Supreme Court sided with Somare last month, but O'Neill continues to have support from lawmakers.

Somare issued a statement Sunday repeating his call to be reinstated, and calling on police and the military to join him.

Turtles' mating habits protect against effects of climate change

Wednesday, January 25, 2012

The mating habits of marine turtle may help to protect them against the effects of climate change, according to new research led by the University of Exeter. Published today (25 January 2012) in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the study shows how the mating patterns of a population of endangered green turtles may be helping them deal with the fact that global warming is leading to a disproportionate number of females being born.

The gender of baby turtles is determined by the temperature of the eggs during incubation, with warmer temperatures leading to more females being born. Higher average global temperatures mean that offspring from some populations are predominantly female. This is threatening the future of some populations and there are concerns that inbreeding within groups due to a lack of males will lead to health problems.

The study focused on a population of the green turtle, Chelonia mydas, nesting in Northern Cyprus, where, due to the high summer temperatures, 95 per cent of babies are female. The study involved a team from the University of Exeter (UK), University of Lefke (Turkey) and North Cyprus Society for Protection of Turtles. Through DNA testing, they were able to ascertain the paternity of baby turtles and, contrary to what they had expected, they found a large number of mating males.

The researchers found that 28 males sired offspring with 20 nesting females: an average of 1.4 males for every female. This means that each female's offspring were sired by one or more fathers. The researchers were surprised to find no evidence that any males fathered offspring born in that season with more than one female.

The research team had thought that one single male might be breeding with multiple females. However, their results suggest that a large number of males are mating with different females at different times. This means that there is less chance of inbreeding.

The team also carried out satellite tracking to discover that males cover thousands of miles of ocean within one breeding season. This suggests they could have also been mating with females at other sites in Turkey or North Africa.

Lead researcher University of Exeter PhD student Lucy Wright said: "It is fantastic to know that there are so many males fathering offspring in this population of green turtles. There is great concern that a lack of males could lead to inbreeding in small populations of marine turtles, potentially causing a population crash. However our research suggests that there are more males out there than expected considering the female-biased hatchling sex ratios and that their mating patterns will buffer the population against any potential feminising effects of climate change."

Corresponding author Dr Annette Broderick added: "Climate change remains a great threat to marine turtles, but our ongoing research will help us focus on where the priority areas are for management that may help them cope with future change."

Peru VP quits but hangs onto Congress seat (Reuters)

LIMA (Reuters) ? Peruvian Vice President Omar Chehade has resigned over corruption allegations but managed to hang onto his seat in Congress on Tuesday after surviving an expulsion vote.

He was able to retain his job in Congress after 13 members of the Permanent Commission in the legislature voted to keep him and 12 voted to remove him.

The departure of Chehade from one of Peru's two largely ceremonial vice presidential posts will not hurt the stability of the government and could help President Ollanta Humala further distance himself from the aide who caused one of the first scandals of his term. Humala took office in July after campaigning on promises to fight corruption.

The scandal initially hurt Humala's popularity, but a Cabinet shuffle he carried out in December and a crackdown on anti-mining protests has lifted his approval rating 7 percentage points to 54 percent, according to a poll published on Sunday. Chehade's resignation could remove a weight that had dragged on Humala's approval rating.

"I don't want to cause disruptions for President Humala, his image or the government," Chehade told members of the Permanent Commission of Congress.

Still, the vote to effectively keep Chehade in Congress could cause a backlash against the legislature, which polls show is widely distrusted by Peruvians, and lawmakers in the parties of the ruling coalition - Gana Peru and Peru Posible - that voted to save him.

Before the vote, opposition politicians warned that Chehade, who had resisted calls for months to step down as a vice president, was maneuvering to hold onto his seat in Congress.

"This is a ploy so that there will be less public outrage when the majority of Gana Peru and Peru Posible vote to protect him in Congress," said lawmaker Mauricio Mulder of the opposition APRA party.

Chehade said he was innocent of allegations that he asked a police general to help his brother evict workers from a cooperative sugar plantation to help a company that wants to take it over.

An overwhelming majority of the 130 lawmakers voted in December to suspend Chehade from Congress for 120 days and he had taken what he called "a leave" from his vice presidential post.

Humala, a former military officer, has shunned Chehade, going so far as to say, "We don't have any relationship with him."

Humala could not fire Chehade and his power to end the scandal has been limited by the constitution, which states that only Congress can remove a vice president from office in an impeachment proceeding.

Turkish court charges Sarah Ferguson on orphanages (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? A Turkish court on Thursday filed charges against Britain's Duchess of York for secretly filming orphanages in the country.

The court accused Ferguson in absentia of going "against the law in acquiring footage and violating privacy" of five children. She faces a maximum term of 22 1/2 years in prison if convicted. No trial date has been set.

Ferguson, the former wife of Britain's Prince Andrew, made an undercover trip to Turkey in 2008 to examine orphanages for a British television program. Secretly filmed images that were broadcast appeared to show children tied to their beds or left in cribs at an orphanage near the capital, Ankara.

It was not clear why it took more than three years to file charges against Ferguson.

Britain's Home Office declined to say whether any requests have been made to extradite Ferguson, saying its general policy was not to comment on individual cases. The Foreign Office said it expected "high legal and judicial standards to be observed," though it added that it would be "premature and inappropriate to speculate on possible outcomes at this stage."

Broncos Vs. Patriots, 2012 NFL Playoffs: Denver Out To Correct Mistakes Of 2011 Game

After climbing the hurdle of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Wild Card round, the Denver Broncos won't have any easier task ahead of them next Saturday when they play the New England Patriots in prime time on CBS. The Broncos will need to defeat a Patriots team that beat them several weeks ago and started them on a three-game losing streak to end the season.

More: Tim Tebow Time Strikes | NFL Playoffs Schedule

It was not a pretty game, as the Patriots defeated the Broncos, 41-23. Tim Tebow was 11-of-22 passing for 194 yards, but he didn't have any touchdown passes. He was the team's leading rusher with 93 yards and two touchdowns, but that is no formula for success.

But what haunted the team wasn't his performance passing. It was the team's inability to keep hold of the ball. The team committed three turnovers on lost fumbles, one each from Tim Tebow, Lance Ball and the since released Quan Cosby. Tebow did have a second fumble, but the Broncos kept possession of the ball.

Certainly, Tim Tebow showed great strides as a passer against the top pass defense of the Steelers' on Sunday, but will he be able to carry all of that over to the divisional round with him?

Jacob Volkmann takes on President Obama again at UFC 141

LAS VEGAS - The last time Jacob Volkmann tried to make a political statement about the President it resulted in some uncomfortable times for the UFC fighter. Apparently, Volkmann is a glutton for punishment or simply wants to exercise his right to speak freely because he fanned the flames again tonight at UFC 141.

After his victory over Danny Castillo, Volkmann asked UFC analyst Joe Rogan if he could say two things. The first was an attempt to call out the UFC lightweight champion.

"Frankie [Edgar] work on your takedown defense. I'm comin and I'm taking you down," said Volkmann.

Next he turned his attention to President Barack Obama.

"Obama needs a glassectomy. Ask me what a glassectomy is Joe," said Volkmann.

Rogan obliged.

"It's where they remove the belly button and put a piece of glass in there so you can see what you're doing while your head's up your [expletive]," said Volkmann.

Rogan gave the fighter a strange look and the quip went over like a lead balloon with the crowd in attendance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

In a postfight interview, Volkmann explained why he took on the President again.

"The whole thing is a joke. He's a joke of a President and I'm just trying to get the point across that his decisions are based on ... it's not based on facts, it's based on who pays him the most money ... it seems like. He's not thinking things through enough," said Volkmann.

Volkmann got some national attention following UFC 125 when he ripped Obama during a postfight interview (2:54 mark). Volkmann told MMAFighting that he wanted his next fight to be against the President. He also called him an "idiot." To no one's surprise, Volkmann got a visit from the Secret Service just two days later. He was also reprimanded by the high school where he serves as an assistant wrestling coach. Volkmann got two weeks paid leave from his job.

The worst came from a brief television appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno."

"The hardest thing was the death threats and the emails and the calls, and my wife ... she was crying pretty hard," Volkmann said.

But he's not worried anymore backlash. "I think that's over. Nobody cares [anymore], really. Who really cares, to be honest? I'm stating my opinion. Everyone's entitled to their opinion."
