Area College Football: Mt. SAC edges Saddleback, will play for title

WALNUT - Joe Montana made a living coming up big when it counted most.

His son Nick Montana has inherited that trait.

The younger Montana threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Dontae Ingraham with 31 seconds to play and Mt. San Antonio College rallied for a 12-7 victory over Saddleback on Saturday in the National Bowl at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.

Mt. SAC, getting 257 yards from Montana, improved to 11-0 and will host Bakersfield, a 48-8 winner over Ventura, for the Southern California Football Association title next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Saddleback, which took a 7-6 lead when Nicholas Thomas recovered a fumble in the end zone in the third quarter, finished 6-5. "I knew I had Dontae Ingraham in the slot," Montana said of the winning play. "The line gave me great time and I saw (Ingraham) was one on one with one of their linebackers.

"I just gave it a shot and he did the rest."

But for a while it looked bleak for the Mounties, who because of wet playing conditions where unable to mount a drive most of the night. Mt. SAC then caught a break with about two minutes to play.

Montana, on fourth and 20 from the Mt. SAC 29, completed a 31-yard pass. But Saddleback was called with a personal foul on the tackle, giving the Mounties a first down at their 43.

A holding penalty pushed Mt. SAC back to the 38, but Montana threw 17 yards to Ingraham for a first down at the Saddleback 44 with 57 seconds remaining.

Washington then hit Ingraham in stride over the middle at the 25 and the receiver went untouched into the end zone for the 12-7 lead with 31 seconds left. Montana threw an incomplete pass on the conversion.

"It was a tough game," Montana said. "I'm just happy we came out with the win.

"I've never been in a more frustrating game in my life. Everyone stepped it up. The offensive line came up huge. They played a great game and gave us just enough time. The receivers played great. We all did it when we needed it."

Saddleback got the ball to its 42 with five seconds left. But Tim Belman's short pass got three yards as time expired.

"We feel very fortunate," said Mt. SAC coach Bob Jastrab, whose program has won the past five SCFA titles and is 15-3 in playoff games since 2007. "I feel very blessed. God was with us, and he willed this victory to Mt. SAC."

FULLERTON 31, CITRUS 24

Citrus College hasn't won a postseason football game since 1988, and that streak continued Saturday.

Jamison Sterns scored on a 1-yard run with less than three minutes to play and Fullerton handed the visiting Owls a 31-24 setback in the Beach Bowl at Fullerton High School.

The Hornets, who shared the Southern California Football Association National Division Southern Conference title with Saddleback, finished 7-4. Quarterback Conor Bednarski threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

The Owls, getting 302 yards passing and one touchdown from quarterback Bernard Porter and two rushing touchdowns from former Damien High School standout Phillip Sainz, finished 7-4 after playing in the school's first bowl game since 2007.

Citrus looked like it might end its postseason drought early in the fourth quarter when it drove 73 yards and tied it at 24 on Sainz's 27-yard run with 13 minutes to play.

But the Owls, even after Brock Newton intercepted a Bednarski pass inside the Citrus 20 with 7:41 remaining, couldn't stop the Hornets. Fullerton, after stopping the Owls on three plays, put together a 50-yard drive and took a 31-24 lead on Sterns' 1-yard run with 2:41 left.

Porter, with completions of 12 and 24 yards to Scott Calles and Isaiah Kepley, respectively, drove Citrus to the Fullerton 19. Porter had an 8-yard completion to Sainz on third and 10. But Donovan Holmes lost 5 yards on fourth and 2 with 1:33 to play.
