S&P downgrades Nokia further into junk status

HELSINKI (AP) ? Rating agency Standard and Poor's on Wednesday downgraded Nokia Corp.'s long-term corporate credit rating further into junk status amid concerns over the cellphone company's deteriorating profitability.

While cutting its rating on Nokia by two notches to BB-, S&P warned there could be further downgrades as it slapped a negative outlook on the company. For S&P, anything below BBB- is considered junk status, or not investment grade. That means S&P thinks Nokia is a speculative investment and will likely make it more expensive for the company to raise money in capital markets.

S&P also lowered the rating for the group's unsecured debt - also to a BB- from a previous BB+ rating, saying that Nokia's second-quarter results and guidance had been lower than expected.

"The negative outlook reflects the possibility of another downgrade if Nokia fails to stabilize its margins and significantly cut its cash losses," the agency said. "We now assume that Nokia's smartphone operations will post lower revenues than we previously anticipated over the coming quarters."

Last month, Nokia reported a 19 percent drop in sales and a quadrupling of net loss to a record ?1.4 billion ($1.8 billion) for the second quarter. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop also said the third quarter would "remain difficult" as the phase-out of Symbian-based phones continues in favor of the Windows operating system that Nokia adopted after joining forces with Microsoft Corp. last year.

The ailing Finnish firm has been fighting fierce competition from Apple Inc.'s iPhone and other makers using Google Inc.'s popular Android software, including Samsung Electronics Co. and HTC of Taiwan. It is also being squeezed in the low-end by Asian manufacturers making cheaper phones, such as China's ZTE.

Nokia CFO Timo Ihamuotila said the impact of S&P's decision on Nokia was "limited."

"As we continue our transition, we are applying a strong focus on cash conservation while simultaneously reducing our operating costs and making our operating model stronger and more agile," Ihamuotila said.

It was S&P's second Nokia downgrade since April. Moody's has downgraded Nokia three times since April and Fitch dropped Nokia to junk status four months ago.

Nokia was the world's leading mobile phone maker for more than a decade but was overtaken by Samsung in the first quarter, according to research firm Gartner.

Nokia has said that it expected a difficult transition period from Symbian and Meego platforms to the Windows operating system.

Last month, it reported that the decline of Symbian phones dragged down sales in all regions expect for North America, where the decline was "more than offset" by sales of the Windows-based Lumia devices. Nokia said it sold 4 million Lumia phones worldwide in the quarter - double the amount in the first quarter.

Nokia's global market share has steadily shrunk from the peak of 40 percent in 2008 to 29 percent in 2011 and is expected to dwindle further this year. Its shares have fallen to their lowest level since the 1990's, plunging below ?2 in mid-June.

On top of previous job cuts Nokia said in June that it will slash 10,000 jobs and close down research and development facilities in Germany and Canada, as well as its main manufacturing plant in Salo, Finland. Nokia aims to save ?1.6 billion through these measures by the end of next year.

In June, Espoo-based Nokia employed 113,000 people, down 18 percent on a year earlier.

Huge La. sinkhole prompts drilling to find source

The Texas-based owner of an abandoned cavern that officials think is the cause of 420-foot deep sinkhole in Louisiana received approval to drill a new well that may shed light on the source of the?gaping?hole, NBC station NEWS33 in Baton Rouge reported.?

Located in the Assumption Parish, about 50 miles south?of Baton Rouge, the hole has swallowed up trees and prompted a mandatory evacuation for nearby residents. Structural damage within the Napoleonville salt dome is believed to be its cause.

Texas Brine Co. got approval to drill the test well to?determine the cavern's?structural status and what pressures, brine or natural gas, it contains. The company faced $5,000 a day in fines if it didn't submit a permit request for the well by Monday.?

"Texas Brine has met the requirement set for the company to have that permit submitted, but that is not the end of their responsibility," Louisiana Department of Natural Resources Secretary Stephen Chustz told the station.?

Company?president Mark Cartwright told state officials that drilling equipment will start arriving late Wednesday or early Thursday, with drilling to begin a few days later. It will take 40 days to get into the cavern.

The company was also informed that its original permit for the cavern closest to the sinkhole requires it assist evacuees. Texas Brine will set up a relief fund for people who were forced to leave their home after Gov. Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency in the parish.

John Boudreaux, director of the parish's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, told The Associated Press that around half of those told to leave their homes have actually left their homes.?

The sinkhole, in a heavily wooded area 200 feet from the cavern, was discovered Aug. 3 following several months of natural gas bubbles coming up from bayous in the area.

The hole has since grown to about 370 feet wide and 420 feet deep by state estimates, though an official with the state Department of Environmental Quality told The Advocate?some sections of the hole are only 50 feet deep.

The AP reported that Texas Brine will be responsible for progress reports of the drilling.

"There are no further regulatory approvals Texas Brine needs at this point," Chustz said. "From here on, their timetable is only limited by their decisions, but we will be monitoring progress to ensure that they expedite the drilling of that well, while maintaining a safe operation."

Researchers make optical fibers from common materials

Clemson researchers are taking common materials to uncommon places by transforming easily obtainable and affordable materials into fiber. Their findings are published in Nature Photonics, the world's top journal focused on light-based technologies.

"We have used a highly purified version of beach sand (silica) for fiber for the last 40 years," said John Ballato, director of the Center for Optical Materials Science and Engineering Technologies at Clemson University. "As a matter of fact, the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for the development of silica optical fibers. However, while silica has done remarkably well over time, it is now being pushed to its limits for faster and cheaper data and new functionality."

It has gotten to the point where there is so much light packed in fiber cable that the silica material essentially can't handle the intensity and has actually begun interacting and rebelling.

"At high power, the light causes the atoms of the material to vibrate more violently and those vibrations convert some of the light energy into sound energy which restricts the ability of the fiber to carry more power," said Ballato. "This, in turn, lessens the amount of light that can travel through the fiber, which limits the amount of information that can be sent for telecommunications uses and power for high-energy laser applications,"

The demand for stronger and more durable fiber material is greater than ever and will only increase with technological advancement. Clemson researchers are focusing on providing a material solution for fiber optics, especially one that can be sold commercially. Their goal is to take a robust, affordable, and easily accessible material that can take the brunt of greater intensity and convert that material into a fiber.

Ballato and his team found that sapphire possesses extraordinary properties that make it exceptionally valuable for high power lasers in which the light intensity interacts with sound waves in the glass and leads to diminished power-handling capabilities.

"Sapphire is new and different in this sense because we're able to use a low-cost and widely used commodity as a fiber," said Ballato. "Sapphire is scalable, acceptable and is a material that people don't think about when it comes to fiber optics. The problem is that sapphire's crystalline structure is not amenable to making into optical fiber using commercially accepted methods."

Ballato actually developed the sapphire fiber to withstand greater intensity and be more useful for high-energy applications than typical commercial fibers.

"Ballato's recent results with sapphire fibers represent a paradigm-shifting development in the field of fiber optics," said Siddarth Ramachandran, associate professor in the electrical and computer engineering at Boston University and an expert in the field. "Materials long considered to be used only in the realm of free-space optics can now be exploited in fiber geometries, which enable long interaction lengths and novel nonlinear optical effects."

"This research is paving the way for everyday commodities to be imagined for technological uses such as fiber optics," Ballato said. "We're performing additional studies with sapphire and other materials that have similar effects for fiber."

Cops: Woman kills fiance hours before wedding

Police in Whitehall Township, Pa., say a 31-year-old woman killed her fiance on their wedding day.?

Police arrested Na Cola Darcel Franklin in the stabbing death early Saturday morning of 36-year-old Billy Rafeal Brewster. The attack occurred on the second-floor landing of Brewster?s apartment building in Whitehall Township, The Express-Times reported.

Authorities said Brewster was stabbed twice in the left torso, resulting in a punctured heart. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 3:30 a.m. Saturday.?

Franklin faces a homicide charge. The Morning Call newspaper? said she cried during her arraignment by video from Lehigh County prison in Allentown.

"I ... did ? not ? kill ? him ? on ? purpose," she said, choking out the words one at a time between sobs.

Police said the couple were to be married Saturday at 10 a.m.

Lehigh County District Attorney James Martin would not comment on a motive.

Neighbors in the surrounding three apartments told the Express-Times that Brewster and Franklin lived with three children in the apartment for about a year.?

Women sang hymns as a group lowered a flag pole outside the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. A group of about 50 men and boys unwrapped the orange cloth covering the pole, washed the pole with water and milk and then rewrapped it with a fresh cloth. The group then planned to go inside the temple for more prayers and hymns.

Army veteran Wade Michael Page used a 9 mm pistol Aug. 5 to kill five men, one woman and wound three other people, including a police officer, in an ambush on the temple that took place shortly before a service was to begin. He took his own life after exchanging gunfire with officers, including one he shot nine times.

Page was a 40-year-old Army veteran with a record of minor alcohol-related crimes and spotty employment history. He had performed with several so-called hate rock bands associated with white supremacists and neo-Nazi groups.

Although investigators have interviewed more than 100 people, combed through Page's email and recovered hundreds of pieces of evidence from his home and the temple, they say they may never know for certain what prompted the attack on the temple.

Members began returning Thursday, after the FBI completed its onsite investigation. They replaced carpets and repaired walls damaged by gunfire. A dime-sized, waist-high bullet hole in a door jamb near the main prayer room was left unrepaired as a memorial to those killed. They included three priests and the temple president, president Satwant Singh Kaleka, 65, who was shot as he tried to fend off Page with a small knife.

Hundreds more visitors showed up Friday after a memorial service at a nearby high school. They brought flowers and offered their support.

A first look at Kim Jong-un's wife.

Ever since the unnamed woman was first spotted with Kim at a July 5 concert, speculation has been rampant that she might be either his spouse or younger sister. But today, North Korean media finally reported that her name was Ri Sol-ju, and she was his wife when the woman and Kim attended a ceremony to mark the completion of an amusement park in an islet in Pyongyang.

Many analysts say that one of Kim?s major weaknesses is that he succeeded his father as leader of North Korea at too early an age; he is believed to only be in his late 20s. And some experts say the North?s admission that Ms. Ri is Kim?s wife is aimed at dispelling doubts about his maturity and experience. They say that by portraying Kim as a married man, Pyongyang hopes the North Korean people, as well as the entire world, will stop seeing him as a youthful, untested leader.

All of that makes sense, but why has the North waited so long to make its announcement about Kim?s marital status?

The answer may be as simple as ?it was too risky.?

Kim?s grandfather, Kim Il-sung, the founder and first leader of North Korea, pulled off the first Communist hereditary power succession in modern times by installing his son Kim Jong-il as the second leader of North Korea. There was great doubt in people?s minds, including the minds of those in power in the North Korean regime, as to whether this would be possible to pull this off again.

Then, when Kim Jong-il was ready to pass power onto a successor, he managed to pull off another hereditary power succession, something that no one else was doing in the modern age. But it sparked demonstrations within North Korea and was considered a politically risky thing to do. In fact, two days before big celebrations were set for Kim Jong-il's last birthday, demonstrations broke out near the Chinese border, according to South Korea's Chosun Ilbo newspaper.

The paper cited a North Korea source who said Kim Jong-un was ?viewed as bloodthirsty and mad.? The source also said, ?Almost everyone thinks he was behind the military attacks against ROKS Cheonan and an island under South Korean control, which led to restrictions on humanitarian aid from the South.? This has further worsened standards of living in the North. North Koreans are ready to do just about anything to stop the succession.?

In addition, there were reports of public burnings inside North Korea of photos of members of the Kim Jong-il family prompted by Kim Jong-il?s announcement that Kim Jong-un would be succeeding him as the next North Korean leader.

Under that light, Kim Jong-un wanted to keep his wife a secret until his hold on power was complete, say observers. If Kim Jong-un showed he had a wife, it might signal the prospect of yet another family dynasty, and the regime worried that people of North Korea might catch on and revolt. He?s essentially been hiding his woman from the public eye since he was named North Korea?s leader upon his dad?s death in December.

But when he sacked his army chief Ri Yong-ho last week and was finally installed as marshal, North Korea?s highest military position, his role as leader was finally solidified.

Now that his power has been consolidated and he is truly the supreme leader of North Korea, he can afford to tell the world and his people that he has a wife who will one day bear him a son who he can name as the next leader of North Korea ? whether North Koreans and the global community like it or not.??

MetroPCS may not be grand in scale, but it's certainly not lacking for ambition. Just over a year after announcing its eventual transition to Voice over LTE, the carrier has officially launched its VoLTE services. Moreover, it's announcing the first sale of a VoLTE-capable handset at one of the company's Dallas / Fort Worth store locations. The Android-powered LG Connect 4G is the outfit's first (and only, for now) VoLTE-capable phone, but the operator's promising more rollouts and phone options "in the coming weeks." For the consumer, those in range of LTE signals should notice clearer calls, and it's become something of a trend to see carriers (Verizon and Sprint, for instance) moving in this direction as 2G / 3G networks start to show their age. In the United States, the demand for luxury goods and upscale real estate climbed during the most prosperous period of the housing bubble, then it fell back to normal levels in 2006. Luxury properties also tend to retain their values in greater proportion when compared to median housing. These conventions, however, are no longer holding up.

According to reports recently issued by real estate analytics firm RealtyTrac, the American luxury real estate market has undergone a major price reduction. Homes valued over $1 million have taken a 20 percent hit in 2012; for example, stately properties that were listed at $2.5 million last year are now selling for $2 million. This price slashing comes in the wake of reports of nationwide median home price increases, although it is important to note that economists are not convinced that the rise in median home prices can be sustained in the long-term.

An Active Luxury Market

Real estate agents are seeing the luxury price drops in a positive light. Sales of upscale homes are usually constant, by the sharp reductions in listing prices are definitely attracting more buyers. The steady nature of the deluxe real estate market may have prompted sellers to be resolute in their listings a year ago, but many real estate investors have turned their attention to other market segments, such as multifamily dwellings and apartment buildings that can be immediately put into service as rental properties.

Sales of luxury homes, which consist of properties listed at $1 million or more, have gone up by 18 percent since January. Sellers are taking notice and marking down their asking prices; in the case of opulent mansions, 30 percent reductions are not unheard of. The situation points to the awakening of a market that enjoyed some stability during the worst of the recession, and many luxury home sellers thought they could hold on and wait for the deal of a lifetime.

The luxury real estate market is largely regional; it is mostly concentrated in California, Florida, New York, and upscale communities along the coastal states. Falling prices in the South Florida communities of Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach are managing to attract wealthy buyers from Latin America, who are looking for a vacation home or an investment property. There is, however, one more reason for the sudden luxury real estate price cut and sell-off: by the well-to-do: the capital gains tax cuts championed by the Bush administration could soon expire.

Democrats, White House wage coordinated attack on Romney taxes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senator Harry Reid and the White House may be taking different roads, but when it comes to Mitt Romney and his taxes, the destination is the same.

That became clearer than ever Monday in the daily White House briefing by spokesman Jay Carney. While keeping a distance from Senate Majority Leader Reid and his claim that Romney failed to pay taxes for 10 years, Carney was happy to take advantage of all the attention, and questions, provoked by the allegation to drive home the administration's broader message.

The bare-knuckle fight over Mitt Romney's tax returns has become part of one effort led by the two highest-ranking Democrats in the country aimed at convincing voters that the Republican presidential candidate cannot be trusted to protect middle-class taxpayers if he won the White House.

"I'm not aware of the White House speaking to Senator Reid about this issue," Carney said Monday. "I would simply say that you all probably know Senator Reid well, and he speaks for himself, and he has addressed this issue."

But, he added, "The reason why this is an issue at a policy level is the president believes very strongly ... that we need to have greater tax fairness and that we need to make sure that we're passing laws that protect the middle class, that specifically give the middle class a tax cut extension, and that we're not passing laws that give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires who have already enjoyed substantial tax breaks in the past."

Reid continues to cite as his source only a single unnamed investor with Bain Capital, the firm that Romney headed for many years.

Romney denies Reid's charge and has called on him to "put up or shut up." Surrogates rushed to his defense over the weekend, with Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus on Sunday calling Reid "a dirty liar" and Republican Senator Lindsey Graham saying the top Senate Democrat was "making things up."

It might be impossible to know which side is right unless Romney releases a decade's worth of tax returns -- something he so far has refused to do.

In the meantime, Democrats are laying down a narrative and keeping it in the news that likely will extend through the November 6 presidential and congressional elections. Its theme is that Republicans want nothing more than to raise taxes on the middle class to help finance tax cuts for the rich with none other than the Republican standard-bearer being the poster child for who would benefit in a Romney administration.

The strategy is a familiar one in modern campaigns, with extreme accusations from outside a campaign serving as a way for the campaign itself to highlight its message without embracing the inflammatory rhetoric.

In the 2004 presidential campaign, it was the "swift boat" attack ads that became a central theme in the drive to defeat President George W. Bush's Democratic challenger, John Kerry.

Four years later, when Barack Obama first campaigned for president, some opposition groups challenged his qualifications to even run, claiming he was not born in the United States, as required by the U.S. Constitution.

Sometimes the attacks work (2004) and sometimes they do not (2008) and Republicans are banking on Reid's broadside failing.

"They (Democrats) keep trying to get something to catch fire, but it's not catching fire," said one Republican strategist, arguing public opinion polls show that voters put a low priority on raising taxes on the rich and are much more focused on the need for job creation in a weak economy.

But Democrats sense a winning hand as surveys they look at point at voter support for having the rich pay more taxes to help share the burden of deficit reduction.

A senior Democratic aide, who asked not to be identified, said Democrats are rallying around their leaders' demands that Romney, a multi-millionaire, open his tax records.

But there will also be a "pivot," the aide said, to simultaneously focus on the impact of Romney's tax-cut plans.

"He (Romney) has used every loophole to pay less than the average middle-class family," the aide said, adding, "The larger question is, the tax structure he wants to see as president ... members (of Congress) are going to go after that as the subject of the larger story."

Democrats got a boost last week, when the respected Tax Policy Center released a new analysis of Romney's tax-cut proposals.

"Our major conclusion is that a revenue-neutral individual income tax change that incorporates the features Governor Romney has proposed ... would provide large tax cuts to high-income households, and increase the tax burdens on middle- and/or lower-income taxpayers," the report said.

'COWARDS,' 'HENCHMEN'

For now, in the midst of a political dead zone, the summer doldrums before the Democratic and Republican presidential nominating conventions and as U.S. voters are more fixated on the Olympic Games than politics, the sniping over Romney's tax forms continues.

Reid's chief of staff, David Krone, in an interview with Politico, accused Republicans of being "a bunch of cowards" in the face of demands for Romney's tax forms.

Congressional staffers generally shy away from publicly criticizing anyone, much less members of Congress. Not so for Krone. "Lindsey Graham, Reince Priebus ? they're a bunch of henchmen for Romney," he told Politico.

Reid has a history of being provocative.

In 2007, as Iraq fell into civil war, Reid said the U.S.-led war was "lost." Two years earlier, he was quoted in the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper saying then President Bush was "a loser," a quip that he quickly apologized for.

This time around, Reid is showing no signs of backing down from his claim that Romney is using the tax code to legally avoid paying taxes.

Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson, asked whether the senator approved of Krone's comments, responded, "Yes."

Arguing that the tax code is the "single biggest policy debate we're having in the country right now," Jentleson added: "It's clear Romney's hiding something. He's being asked to be elected president without presenting ... to the American people a huge part of his life - his financial issues."
