Love, Natalie - Home - Baby Shower

This weekend could not get here fast enough. My Mom flies into town on Friday night, and my baby shower is on Saturday in Issaquah. Is it really only two months away until we get to meet this bundle of joy??

Talented Tarah designed the invitations. I adore them. Going to frame it for the nursery.

I'm excited to receive the recipes. Such a great idea.?

Tarah and Tiffany are throwing this shower for me. I am beyond thankful and feel very special that I have the friends I have.?

Tiffany and I met when she was pregnant with Kennedy 6 years ago. She was about to pop and I had just started dating her best friend. I pretty much took Tiffany on as my best friend too:) Its safe to say that we love each other...like sisters, and we will be friends til we are old, wrinkly, senile and sharing a room at the nut house. She has been like a sister to my husband for years and years and I really admire her loyalty to him and now myself. I'm so excited to share our journey as mom's and raise our kids together. Like in this photo, life couldn't get much better!?

Tarah and I go WAY back. We became good friends my sophomore year and her junior year. She knew I was nutty and although she hid it better, she was just as nutty as me. Fun people tend to gravitate towards each other:) We sat by each other in art class and drew and painted effortlessly while everyone else's work sucked to put it nicely! We boozed it up pool side at her house while her mom Connie made endless amounts of margarita's?in their tiki bar. We really lived it up in our twenties while I was drugged up most of the time on pain killers and prednisone, but,?Tarah always hung in there with me. Crazy and emotional me, Tarah was always there. Looking at her?now I am so proud of her. She's turned her talent into an amazing career, married a handsome man and had a bouncy (drooly) baby boy. I'm so thankful we've stuck together all of these years.?

These are little thank you gifts. BTW, if you need to find a way to use fabric scraps, these fabric garlands were really easy to make.?

I hope to share photos of the shower when I return next week.?

iMore at Macworld|iWorld 2013: TWiT

Tuesday morning we woke up early and headed over to Blue Bottle for some state-of-the-art-of coffee. If you like coffee and you're ever in San Francisco, it's simply a must-visit. When Apple events are in town, the line out front of Blue Bottle is often a long and filled with geeks as the lines to get into the sessions.

Once we were fueled up, we drove up to Petaluma to the TWiT cottage. It's about a 60 minute drive from San Francisco, and if you've ever heard of a little movie called Star Wars, you might recognize the area you pass by as Skywalker Ranch country, where George Lucas lives and works. Sadly, no Wookies, Ewoks, Hutts, or Storm Troopers could be seen from roadside.

We got to Petaluma early so hit up Hallie's Diner for breakfast. It was good and the staff was friendly, immediately asking if we were there for TWiT. I guess our geek-force betrayed us. At around 10:30, we headed over to the TWiT brick house.

Tech News Today was still shooting when we arrived, with Sarah Lane and Iyaz Akhtar talking about the future potential for DRM-free box with Tom Merrit who, sadly, wasn't in studio today.

Pretty soon we set up for MacBreak Weekly and I got to feel what it was like sitting at the table in real life, as opposed to as a disembodied head floating above it. In a word, spectacular. Leo Laporte, Alex Lindsay, Andy Ihnatko and I then spent the next couple of hours talking about everything Apple.

Following the show, our producer, Chad Johnson gave us a tour of the TWiT facilities, which look like something out of Industrial Lights and Magic. There are a bunch of sets upstairs in the main studio, along with a few offices and a kitchen. Downstairs there's a tricaster room and a server room. TWiT's brains.

Alex gave us a tour of Pixel Corps, which shares the same building. Pixel Corps looks like Seal Team 6 of video production. Almost any way of pushing motion pictures through digital pipes is there, and they're continuously working on ever more bleeding edge, absolutely McGyver-like solutions for doing it better. You can almost see them grabbing a pack of cameras, laptops, and interconnects and jumping out of planes while Alex yells "Go! Go! Go!""

On the way back from Petaluma, we stopped off on both sides of the Golden Gate Bridge to take in the sunset. No words can do that justice, so...

I did manage to sneak an epic meta shot of Martin doing one of his epic "The Stance" self-portraits. (Note the iPhone and Gorilla Pod in the foreground).

Martin took a bunch more photos with his Canon 5D Mark III, both at TWiT and at the bridge, as well as some video of me hijacking the MacBreak Weekly set and going on the tour. Look for it soon, right here!

Tomorrow we're heading out to Cupertino. Again, I'll blog about that later, or you can follow me on Twitter to watch it unfold in real -- sometimes farcical -- time.

Boy Scouts consider end to gay ban

Boy Scouts recite the Pledge of Allegiance in Charlottesville, Va. (Getty)

The Boy Scouts of America is considering an end to its longstanding policy of banning gay scouts and scout leaders, the organization said on Monday.

The new policy would eliminate the ban on gays from its national rules, allowing local chapters to decide for themselves.

?The BSA is discussing potentially removing the national membership restriction regarding sexual orientation," Deron Smith, a spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America, said in an emailed statement. "This would mean there would no longer be any national policy regarding sexual orientation. The policy change under discussion would allow the religious, civic or educational organizations that oversee and deliver scouting to determine how to address this issue."

The 102-year-old scouting organization represents 290 local councils and more than 116,000 local organizations.

The move would allow parents to then "choose a local unit which best meets the needs of their families,? Smith added. The new policy could be announced as early as next week.

It would also be a public reversal of policy for an organization that recently rejected calls for change. In 2012, following an internal study on the issue, the Boy Scouts of America's executive board issued a statement affirming the ban, saying it was ?the best policy for the organization.?

The decision followed the forced resignations of gay scout leaders and the denial of an Eagle Award to Ryan Andresen, a California high-school senior who had recently come out to his friends and family. It also prompted a response from the White House, which said President Obama sharply opposed the Boy Scouts' ban on gays.

?He also opposes discrimination in all forms,? the White House said in a statement, "and as such opposes this policy that discriminates on basis of sexual orientation."

According to NBC, some board members urged the youth organization to reconsider its policy as some sponsoring organizations responded by withdrawing their financial support of the group.

Change.org petitions opposing the ban have collected more than 1.2 million signatures. And according to Scouts for Equality, at least 350 Eagle Scouts returned their pins in protest.

Drill reaches deep Antarctic lake

An American attempt to bore down into Lake Whillans, a body of water buried almost 1km under the Antarctic ice, has achieved its aim.

Scientists reported on Sunday that sensors on their drill system had noted a change in pressure, indicating contact had been made with the lake.

A camera was then sent down to verify the breakthrough.

The Whillans project is one of a number of such ventures trying to investigate Antarctica's buried lakes.

In December, a British team abandoned its efforts to get into Lake Ellsworth after encountering technical difficulties.

The Russians have taken samples from Lake Vostok, although they have yet to report their findings.

Lake Whillans is sited in the west of Antarctica, on the southeastern edge of the Ross Sea.

The Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling (Wissard) team has been using a hot-water drill to melt a 30cm-diameter hole through the overlying ice.

Breakthrough to the lake surface was reported on the project's website.

The intention, now that the hole is secure, is to lower various sampling tools and sensors into the lake to study its properties and environment.

Some of the samples will be assessed onsite at the ice surface in temporary labs, and others will be returned to partner universities for more extensive analysis.

The Wissard blog said the thickness of the overlying ice was measured to be 801m, which agreed well with the estimates from seismic imaging.

More than 300 large bodies of water have now been identified under the White Continent.

They are kept liquid by geothermal heat and pressure, and are part of a vast and dynamic hydrological network at play under the ice sheet.

Some of the lakes are connected, and will exchange water. But some may be completely cut off, in which case their water could have been resident in one place for thousands of years, and that means they probably play host to microorganisms unknown to modern science.

Whillans is not as deep as either Vostok (4km) or Ellsworth (3km), and its water is exchanged much more frequently by the under-ice streams.

Scientists are keen to study Antarctica's subglacial hydrological systems because liquid water beneath the ice sheet will influence its movement. Understanding the sheet's long-term stability in a warming world has to take this into account.

These under-ice environments may also provide insight into the habitability of some moons in the Solar System.

Europa, a satellite of Jupiter, and Enceladus, which orbits Saturn, both have large volumes of liquid water buried beneath their icy crusts.

Astrobiologists think such moons are promising places to go look for extra-terrestrial microorganisms.

France investigates Diane-35 acne drug after deaths

PARIS (Reuters) - France's health regulator has opened an inquiry into acne drug Diane-35, which is also used as a contraceptive, after four deaths linked to the drug in the past 25 years.

Health regulator ANSM said on Sunday that Diane-35, produced by German drugmaker Bayer, is authorized in 135 countries and sold in more than 116. Last year about 325,000 women in France used the drug, ANSM said, adding it would publish its report next week.

ANSM said the four deaths were due to thrombosis linked to the use of Diane-35. Three other deaths possibly connected to the drug, reported by the media, were linked to other health issues, the agency said.

Diane-35, also sold as Dianette in some countries, reduces acne for women by regulating hormones, according to several medical websites. The drug is also used as a contraceptive.

Earlier this month, ANSM said it was studying the possibility of limiting the use of third- and fourth-generation contraceptive pills after a woman sued Bayer over alleged side-effects such as embolism, or blood clots.

Keep it Together: A First Birthday Party

Most reasonable families will hold their baby's First Birthday Party in their home. Invite just a few guests; mainly family and close friends. Bake a small homemade cake with natural baby friendly ingredients. Quiet, low-key, and calm is the way to go as not to overwhelm the little one (who won't remember it anyway).

We've never done it like that, though, at our house. I tried (really, I tried!) to keep it low-key for Jaina's first birthday. But once I invited one family from the neighborhood, I realized that it would be nice to invite another family from the neighborhood, and then I couldn't leave out the other family from the neighborhood, too. Then there were friends from MOMS Club and from the library storytime. And close friends of the family. And of course, family!

We ended up having so many people that some guests had to sit on our stairs and on our front porch to eat cake.

With Jayce's first birthday party, pretty much the exact same thing happened.

The only difference with Jocelyn's party is that Brian put his foot down about NOT having it at the house.

Where on earth are we going to find a place to have a one year old's birthday party in January?

Too cold for parks, too young for pretty much anything else.

I finally had the great idea to call the Gymboree Play and Music gym in a neighboring town. Perfect!

(well, except for the fact that ages 5 and older can't play. I had some pretty bored big kids that had to occupy themselves with a game of Bingo and some crafts).

Despite the big kids not being involved, the babies, toddlers, and preschoolers had a ball! (10 little ones in all!)

Her cake was another wonderful creation by Cakes by Dodi...

You know how much Jocelyn loves her monkey :)
All in all, it was a great birthday!

I couldn't take pictures of her with her cake (she was hilarious and wouldn't really touch it without using a fork!) but as soon as I get some, I'll upload them in another post!

White House dismisses high-stakes legal defeat | The Daily Caller

White House spokesman Jay Carney on Friday tried to dismiss the court decision that has torpedoed President Barack Obama?s efforts to rewrite financial and labor regulations.

?The court decided a case brought by a company, and the decision applies to that case [and] does not apply more broadly,? Carney insisted during his Jan. 25 daily press briefing.

But the decision could invalidate hundreds of controversial rules and regulations issued since January 2012 by the National Labor Relations Board and the Consumer Finance Protection Board.

?This decision now casts serious doubt?on whether the president?s ?recess? appointment of Richard Cordray to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ? is constitutional,? said a statement from Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican Senate leader, who has supported the lawsuit against Obama?s appointments.

?The decision is novel and unprecedented,? Carney countered. ?It contradicts 150 years of practice by Democratic and Republican administrations, [and] we respectfully but strongly disagree with the ruling.?

Carney did not say if the administration will appeal.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Appeals Court in D.C. on Friday declared that President Obama?s attempted appointments in January 2012 of three people to National Labor Relations Board violated the Constitution?s rule that gives the Senate sole authority to declare when it is in session.

In January 2012, Obama said he could appoint the officials without getting Senate confirmation, because the Senate was in recess at the time. The Constitution allows the president to make short-term appointments when the Senate is out of session.

If the court?s decision stands ? it is likely to be reviewed at some point by the U.S. Supreme Court ? all of the board?s 2012 decisions will be vulnerable to lawsuits that argue the board?s decisions were based on votes by people who were never confirmed to the board.

More importantly, the court?s decision suggests that regulations issued in 2012 by the Consumer Finance Protection Board are also invalid. That?s because Obama also claimed in January 2012 to have appointed Richard Cordray to run the bureau.

Cordray?s appointment allowed the bureau ? whose processes and decisions are largely immune from congressional or judicial oversight ? to issue a series of regulations on the financial sector that subordinate their profit-seeking goals to the federal government?s political agenda.

For example, the bureau has issued a rule which disadvantages banks that charge higher interest rates to unreliable borrowers. Without that basic ability to raise or lower interest rates, banks will try to protect their shareholders by minimizing lending to risky borrowers, or by raising interest rate on all borrowers, including diligent and reliable borrowers.

Cordray?s appointment is especially sensitive to lawsuits, because the law which established the bureau said its primary regulatory powers would only be activated when the Senate confirms the first director.

West continues to drift into Democrats' column

DENVER (AP) ? A political generation ago, the West signaled the nation's rightward swing ? from the emergence of Ronald Reagan to the success of tax-limitation ballot measures in California and Colorado. But now the fabled expanse of jagged peaks, arid deserts and emerald coastlines is trending in a different direction.

From Washington state ? where voters in November legalized marijuana and upheld the legality of gay marriage ? to New Mexico, once a hotly contested swing state that Republicans ceded to Democrats in the presidential campaign, the West has become largely Democratic terrain.

There are, as always, exceptions. Lightly populated Idaho and Wyoming remain strongly Republican, as does Utah. And Democrats are struggling in Arizona, where a bruising immigration debate has given Republicans a lock on statewide offices but may provide Democrats an opening by firming up their support among the state's growing Hispanic population. Still, the overall trend is clear, according to analysts on all sides of the political spectrum.

"It's just a different world," said Bill Carrick, a veteran Democratic strategist in Los Angeles who has worked widely in the region. "Nevada became the next California and now Arizona looks like it will become the next Nevada. ... It's just pushing the West further and further from Republicans."

The shift is due to a combination of factors: the fusion of the region's libertarian spirit with both an influx of transplants from more liberal states seeking a better quality of life, and a growing immigrant population alienated by increasingly hardline Republican immigration proposals.

"Look at the migration patterns," said Sig Rogich, a Republican consultant in Las Vegas who worked on Reagan's presidential campaigns. "You're seeing the aftermath of a new generation of young men and women whose parents moved westward."

Politics is different in the region. Western states generally have weak political parties, part of the legacy of their political maturation during the progressive era at the start of the 20th century. Most local elections are nonpartisan affairs and voters often have the right to unilaterally set policy via ballot initiative. Western voters have long cherished nonpartisan independence, even when they voted a relatively straight party ticket.

"The West is the most American part of America," said Dave Kopel of the Independence Institute, a libertarian think tank in Denver. "It is a place where you have much more respect for individual choice and you have more ability to be who you want to be."

During the 1980s and 1990s, that libertarian streak fed a series of Republican victories as voters approved tax-limitation initiatives, protested federal environmental regulations and kept statehouses firmly in the GOP's hands. But nowadays it means something else, Carrick said.

"The libertarian thing is no longer about property rights or gun rights," he said. "It's now about letting people live their lives as they choose."

Ironically, Republicans' success may have contributed to that shift. The party managed to enshrine staunch anti-tax measures in several states' constitutions through ballot initiatives, making it very difficult to raise taxes in California, Colorado and Washington state. As a result, Democrats can't easily raise revenue ? but they also can't be attacked for doing so, said Ron Dotzauer, a Seattle-based Democratic strategist. "They can't be defined as the pro-tax group because they can't tax," he said.

There are prominent Republicans who demonstrate that the party can still win the region. Brian Sandoval in Nevada and Susana Martinez in New Mexico are popular Republican governors, but their relatively moderate stances often put them at odds with the national party. Both, for example, just agreed to the Medicaid expansion under President Barack Obama's health care plan, something that is anathema to many conservative Republicans.

"People appreciate a leader who takes more pragmatic approaches," said Nicole McCleskey, a New Mexico-based GOP pollster who advises Martinez. She argued that Democrats' success in the region is overstated and noted that, outside of California, Republicans in 2012 only lost one Western congressional seat. As an example of how Republicans can succeed, she cited New Mexico, where the party picked up seats in the state Legislature despite the Obama wave.

But McCleskey acknowledged that New Mexico Republicans were helped by the national GOP basically giving up on the presidential race in the state. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney did not contest the state, minimizing the damage of a divisive presidential campaign.

"We were able to localize a lot of these races and build on the change that has taken place with a strong Republican governor," she said. "Republicans fought on state issues and the Democrats tried to fight on national issues."

Jill Hanauer is a Democratic strategist who engineered her party's takeover of the Colorado state Legislature in 2004. She agrees with McCleskey that the West cannot be considered a Democratic lock.

"The reason Democrats or progressives are winning is that Republicans got fat and happy," said Hanauer, who is now president of Project New America, a political data and strategy company in Denver. "The worst thing that can happen for Democrats is to take it for granted."

In 2002, Ruy Teixeira, a Washington, D.C.-based Democratic strategist, co-wrote "The Emerging Democratic Majority," which predicted that demographic and social trends would turn parts of the country that were deep red, like the interior Mountain West, into Democratic-leaning states. The book was published shortly after Republicans took back the U.S. Senate in the 2002 midterm elections and was received skeptically.

Last year, Teixeira and a bevy of other researchers published a new book on the Mountain West as America's new swing region. Now there was little pushback.

Teixeira said the West's shift has been dramatic because of the heavy migration to the region. Another factor is the ballot initiative process, which magnifies political trends by making it easier to enact dramatic policy changes like marijuana legalization.

But he argued in an interview that what's happened to the West is not very different from what's taking place across the country. Surveys for his book last year found it only slightly more libertarian on social issues and holding similar views toward government and taxation as other parts of the country. That, he said, is bad news for Republicans ? their problem is national, not regional.

"It's not like there's something in the water in state X that's making them harder for Republicans," Teixeira said. "It's just the same series of changes that are working themselves out in all states."

Purported Relativity Paradox Resolved

Science is alive and well in at least the Physics community. Whilst I won't even pretend to understand General Relativity, the questioning of it and discussion about those questions is the true essence of science.

Sigh. General Relativity was not even at question here. Perhaps commenting on Slashdot should require a minimum amount of knowing what one is talking about. AAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA. Sigh.

At any rate, electrical engineers tend to view parts of Special Relativity in isolation. That makes them easier to handle and "visualize" in some respects, but much harder to deal with interactions. Minkovsky vectors and tensors are what theoretical physicists use instead, grouping several codependent field parts i

Chance finding reveals new control on blood vessels in developing brain

Friday, January 25, 2013

Zhen Huang freely admits he was not interested in blood vessels four years ago when he was studying brain development in a fetal mouse.

Instead, he wanted to see how changing a particular gene in brain cells called glia would affect the growth of neurons.

The result was hemorrhage, caused by deteriorating veins and arteries, and it begged for explanation.

"It was a surprising finding," says Huang, an assistant professor of neuroscience and neurology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "I was mainly interested in the neurological aspect, how the brain develops and wires itself to prepare for all the wonderful things it does."

But chance favors the prepared mind, as Louis Pasteur said, and Huang knew he needed to follow up on the suggestion that glia, normally considered "helpers" for the neurons, would affect the growth of blood vessels. For one thing, blood flow is a big deal in the brain, says Huang, whose collaborators included Shang Ma, in the graduate program in cellular and molecular biology at UW-Madison. "We know the brain is very energy-intensive. Per unit of volume, it consumes 10 times as much oxygen as the rest of the body."

Although it makes intuitive sense that blood vessel development should be guided by neuronal development in some fashion, Huang spent years making sure he wasn't being mislead by his experiment. Now, he's satisfied himself, and his scientific reviewers, and the journal PLOS Biology has just published his study.

Glial cells in the nervous system establish a nurturing environment for neurons but do not carry signals. In particular, Huang looked at "radial glial cells," which also act as stem cells in creating new neurons. Radial glia extend from the inside of the brain to the outside, and also guide growing neurons to their final locations.

A standard way to find out what cells and genes do is to "knock out" specific genes, using a technology invented at UW-Madison by former professor Oliver Smithies (who shared the 2010 Nobel Prize for this discovery).

When Huang grew mice with a "knock out" mutation that blocked cell division among the radial glia, he expected to see abnormalities in the embryonic brain. But the major abnormality was completely unexpected: blood vessels that had already formed had collapsed.

New blood vessels in an embryo generally develop via a two-step process, first growing, and then stabilizing. "If the second step cannot be carried out, the vessels may already be formed, but the organ still cannot get its blood supply because the vessel will regress, or collapse," Huang says.

When blood vessels collapse, neurons start to die, says Huang. Some brain diseases, including Alzheimer's and hemorrhagic stroke, show a similar regression, and Huang says it's possible that the signaling mechanism that he experimentally blocked may play a role in these diseases as well.

Although any clinical treatment is years away, Huang is still basking in the thrill of basic discovery.

"We find that these progenitor and helper cells, the radial glia, regulate blood vessel development, and nobody has found that before." Huang says. "We used a mouse with alterations in genetics that regulate activity in these helper cells in the brain, and were very surprised to see that this had a drastic effect on blood vessel development. Previously it was always thought that these were two separate systems, now we know there is crosstalk between them. It's almost like a new field has opened up."

Saturday Soapbox: Buy-to-let gaming ? Opinions ? Eurogamer.net

This week has seen two big stories about premium games trying to squeeze ever-more money out of their players. They're not immediately obvious bedfellows; Square Enix's Final Fantasy: All the Bravest is a mobile title divided into cash-hungry chunks, and Dead Space 3 is as typical an AAA console title as you'll get. But both excite the same feeling of unease, and not just because they share a common theme of exploitation; it's that point where something bearable becomes too much.

This is nothing to do with the free-to-play business model, but rather the application of its mechanics. Surely everyone loves free-to-play games by now, and the many shining examples across mobile and PC show it can be the basis for top-notch titles. But there are things we acknowledge as players about free-to-play, a familiarity with its structure that means certain mechanics are accepted as inevitable: plenty of cosmetic in-app purchases, a grind-heavy levelling or crafting system, even large sections of the gameworld hived-off without payment. These things, when they are the toll booths for a great free experience, do not bother me.

The thought of paying a tax does hang loosely over my idea of free-to-play mechanics, and perhaps that's why it's so startling to see them in full price games. In terms of Final Fantasy: All the Bravest the up-front cost is ?2.49 but, like it or lump it, on the App Store that's a premium. Square Enix has previously released its games (usually ports) at a much higher price, and it's clear this original title is some kind of exploration of how they can reduce the entry point but still get the full whack by the end - it's a game they want ?30 for, in other words, so they've chopped it into paid chunks and sold you the first one for ?2.49.

1

FF: ATB has three 'extra' worlds for ?2.49 each, plus 35 FF characters at 69p each, a total of just over ?30 if you want everything (for which there is an achievement). The hourglasses are 3 for 69p, up to 20 for ?1.99.

Now, that's the prerogative of Square Enix. There's another side to FF: ATB which goes even further, however, and strikes me as wholly unethical design. A brief explanation of how the game works; it's a visual reduction of the old-style Final Fantasy 'active time battle' system with a simple touch interface. This is an automated lightshow, where you swipe your finger up and down the ranks of characters, watch them whack away, and occasionally get whacked back. The thing is, it's not all that much of a game; battles are about luck and grind. It's like playing pachinko.

Bad enough, but it's what ties into this that goes beyond reason. This ?2.49 game is dependent on a free-to-play time mechanic during game overs - if all of the party in FF: ATB die, you have the choice to restart the battle (pointless, because winning is a matter of time), wait three minutes for each individual character to resurrect (which can take hours), or use one of the hourglass IAPs to revive the party. Let me make this absolutely clear: progression in this game is impossible without either waiting for long periods or paying for hourglasses. It quite simply locks you out.

This is the most cynical and unethical creep of free-to-play mechanics into a paid-for game I've ever seen. I would absolutely love to hear what Square Enix call it. If a company like this is prepared to timelock its players out of premium games then others will follow - and if so, shouldn't that be clearly marked, as distinct from other in-app purchases? Timelocks like this surely have to be addressed by vendors. I cannot fathom why any publisher would think conning people like this is a good idea, yet here we are.

Still, at least players on mobile are much more used to the way these tactics work, and wising up to the cash grabs. The intrusion of microtransactions feels more natural in this space, and many games handle them with considerably more nuance than Square Enix's offering. When you're paying ?40 for a game like Dead Space 3, however, where do you draw the line?

2

?Hey Carver, where'd ya get that sweet red helmet?? ?Picked it up at one of those new vending machines greenhorn, some other sucker takes the tab and I get the sugar.?

Let's get a few things out of the way: post-launch DLC is fine, cosmetic stuff like costumes is fine, and lots of AAA games offer great value for extra money. The issue with Dead Space 3 is nothing to do with downloadable extras, but the intrusion of a free-to-play mechanic into its high-priced world; you can pay to get extra resources for its weapon-crafting system.

That is not a small part of the experience. I may have a soft spot for Resi, but Dead Space is the current king of survival horror games. The way your kit expands and improves has always been a key ingredient in the best of this genre, and those sparse power nodes always felt like real treasure. It's a system that's absolutely fine as it is, and it will inevitably be changed for the worse by the intrusion of in-game purchases.

I'm sure EA and Visceral Games will say different, but there's no way the presence of microtransactions can avoid influencing its design. If no-one will pay, then why spend time putting it in? If people are going to pay, then how do you manipulate the circumstances to make them? On a project of this magnitude, a feature cannot exist in a vacuum - it warps everything around it to fit. Does that corridor really need to be this long? Why is that rare crafting item hidden in such an out-of-the-way place? Every time you see the little shop prompt, you'll know.

3

An amazing feature of FF: ATB is that you constantly earn Gil, the FF currency, throughout - yet there isn't a single thing in the game to spend it on. It's like Square are actually mocking the player at times.

This is a difficult subject, because on the one hand publishers will argue players get plenty of hours of entertainment for their money, and in many cases they'd be right. On the other, a game that launches in the standard ?40-?50 range is asking for what is quite simply an awful lot of money. Consumers paying that deserve a complete product in return; not one where a central mechanic has been artificially adjusted to squeeze more out. Can you imagine buying Dead Space 3, sitting down to play it in a darkened room, then feeling pressured to go and dig out your bank card?

Amid all the coverage of these events, the pun of the week went to RockPaperShotgun's twitter feed with 'The Grinding of Isaac?' That captures everything about how it feels; the biblical wrongness of grinding, however gently, being introduced into a premium game to eke a little bit more out of your wallet. As many wags this week have pointed out, EA is trying to charge you ?40 for an experience, and then charge you more to skip parts of it - a bittersweet joke because, of course, it's true.

It is a great pity that angry gamers are so good at getting het up about pointless things, like Dante's new hairstyle, rather than these game-ruining microtransactions - a bit of real consumer advocacy wouldn't go amiss. Don't we have the right to know if a premium game is built on core systems with a paid-for element? Shouldn't that be marked on its advertising and flagged in its product description? What about specific tools like timelocks? Developers are clearly going to use them, so what's the appropriate response?

The truth is that, for Square Enix and EA, the gamble is quite independent of the specialist press - its success or failure will be determined by the numbers, not any reputational damage on the way. Hoping that these companies make monetisation decisions in an ethical or even a design-led context has ended up here. The market will decide where we go, of course, and one can only hope it spits these experiments back in disgust. Failing that, welcome to the future; where buying a game is an ongoing process.

Towards a new generation of optoelectronic nanomaterials

Montreal, January 25, 2013 By achieving the synthesis of a novel nanohybrid structure by means of the pulsed laser ablation (PLA) technique, Professor My Ali El Khakani and his team paved the way for a new generation of optoelectronic materials. The combination of carbon nanotubes and lead sulfide (PbS) nanoparticles was performed using an effective and relatively simple process that offers considerable latitude for creating other nanohybrids for a variety of applications. The INRS nergie Matriaux Tlcommunications Research Centre researcher's work, published in the renowned journal Advanced Materials, presents very promising prospects for the development of third-generation solar devices, fast photodetectors, and optoelectronic switches.

In recent years, research on the photoelectronic properties of semiconductor nanoparticles, such as PbS, has been growing. The coupling of these nanoparticles with carbon nanotubes is a promising strategy for effectively generating photocurrent. The synthesis methods used by other research teams had significant limitations. "When chemically synthesizing nanohybrids, researchers used ligands, which prevented nanoparticle agglomeration, on one hand, but significantly affected the charge transfer dynamics from nanoparticles to nanotubes," said Professor El Khakani. Ligands reduce photoresponse efficiency and increase the reaction timetwo effects that were not observed in nanohybrids produced by PLA since PbS is in direct atomic contact with the nanotubes' surafce.

"At the beginning, we didn't know if the nanohybrids would form in such a way as to enable their effective use for photodetection," said Ibrahima Ka, an INRS doctoral student working under the supervision of Professor El Khakani and co-supervised by Professor Dongling Ma. "By optimizing our approach, we developed nanohybrids whose photoactivity can be almost tailored at will." By integrating the new nanohybrid material into functional photoconductive devices, the researchers were pleased to demonstrate its strong photoresponse, which overpasses the results obtained by other methods. Thus, they have been able to achieve photoresponse values as high as 670% at 633 nm and 1350% at 405 nm under conditions where other nanohybrids did not exceed 37%. Furthermore, when the material is illuminated by a laser, the photocurrent response time is 1,000 to 100,000 times faster than those reported to date for other nanohybrids.

The PLA synthesis process produces very pure nanostructures and provides greater control over nanohybrid characteristics. Professor El Khakani's results demonstrate the enormous potential of these carbon nanotubes with PbS quantum dots.

North Korea will target 'sworn enemy' U.S. with nuke test

In a bellicose statement singling out the United States as the "sworn enemy" of the Korean people, North Korea today announced plans for a third nuclear test and continued rocket launches.

The move is seen as a disappointment to those who hoped the country's new leader, Kim Jong-Un, might take a less aggressive path than his predecessor and father, Kim Jong-il.

It is also seen as a direct challenge to President Obama and South Korea's newly elected president, Park Geun-hye, who takes office next month.

The statement from North Korea's National Defense Commission read:

"Settling accounts with the U.S. needs to be done with force, not with words as it regards jungle law as the rule of its survival."

The renewed threats come in response to the U.S. backed resolution tightening sanctions against North Korea after its December rocket launch.

At that time, North Korea repeatedly insisted that the launch was simply part of its peaceful space program. The recent statement made no mention of that.

It read: "We are not disguising the fact that the various satellites and long-range rockets that we will fire and the high-level nuclear test we will carry out are targeted at the United States."

South Korean officials analyzed debris from the December launch that, they say, indicates North Korea built and tested crucial components for a missile that can fly further than 6,200 miles.

Analysts say that preparations at the Pungyee test site in northeastern North Korea are underway and that a new underground test could take place on short notice.

Within the international monitoring community it is not believed that North Korea currently has the capability to launch a long-range rocket with the capacity to reach the United States or the technology to mount a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile. But the U.S. is not pleased with North Korea's plans. Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy to the region, said in Seoul, "We hope they don't do it. We call on them not to do it."

China, North Korea's main ally in the region, is also urging restraint. China backed the U.S. resolution at the United Nations and today the Foreign Ministry cautioned North Korea not to take further steps to increase tension.

Featured Android App Review: FxGuru ? Movie FX Director [Entertainment]

Want to be a movie director utilizing big time special effects that you can only find in big budget movies? Then you need to check out FxGuru: Movie FX Director from Picadelic. I guarantee you that if you download this app you will be the life of the party or you next friendly gathering.

You can film your house with UFOs flying above it or maybe your friend?s house with a satellite crashing on their front lawn. You would think this would be complicated, but you can have a video ready for sharing in less than a minute. All you have to do is make sure there is a decent amount of light, pick your effect, and film the location. The app guides you during the filming process so that you know where the effects will take place. You?re only going to shoot for about 15 seconds, so it doesn?t take long to make a pretty polished video.

There are a number of effects that include a Satellite Crash, Holiday Bot, UFO Shuttle, TNT Barrel, Meteor Impact, UFO Invasion, Molotov Cocktail, Grenade, Building Demolition, Mech Attack, UFO Arrival, Alien Probe, Flame Thrower, UFO Calling, Rocket Launcher, Cruise Missiles, and a Bunker Buster. The possibilities are endless: destroy parked cars, have a crash landing in a pool, or UFO?s in the sky while you are sightseeing. Now at first I was skeptical in that I figured the effects would be cheesy and wouldn?t blend in well. I was dead wrong. Picadelic put together some really nice high quality effects. They simply look stunning.

U.S. experts probe Boeing 787 in Japan; focus on battery

TAKAMATSU, Japan | Fri Jan 18, 2013 3:11am EST

TAKAMATSU, Japan (Reuters) - A team of experts from U.S. aviation authorities and Boeing Co arrived in Japan on Friday to inspect a 787 Dreamliner passenger jet that made an emergency landing on a domestic All Nippon Airways Co flight earlier this week.

The incident prompted regulators in the United States and around the world to ground the 50 Dreamliners already in service. Battery-related problems are being investigated after warning lights indicated a battery fault on the ANA flight on Wednesday.

The 787, a lightweight, mainly carbon-composite aircraft, has been plagued by mishaps, raising concerns over its use of lithium-ion batteries, which pack more energy and are faster to recharge but which are potentially more volatile.

The five representatives from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Boeing are helping Japanese authorities in the investigation of the aircraft, which remains parked at the side of Takamatsu airport in western Japan.

The Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB) aims to end its initial checks by around midday on Saturday, a person familiar with the matter told Reuters.

"The Boeing 787 is an absolutely wonderful aircraft and we will spare no effort to help it get back in the air safely as soon as possible," said ANA spokesman Hideya Oishi.

GS Yuasa Corp, the Japanese company that makes batteries for the Dreamliner, said it also sent three engineers to Takamatsu to help the investigation.

A person at the company, who asked not to be named due to the sensitivity of the issue, said: "Our company's battery has been vilified for now, but it only functions as part of a whole system. So we're trying to find out exactly where there was a problem within the system."

Shares in the Kyoto-based battery maker rose 3 percent on Friday, having dropped around 18 percent since January 7 when a battery caught fire in the auxiliary power unit (APU) of a Japan Airlines (JAL) 787 parked at Boston Logan International Airport.

The U.S. investigation into that incident is focused for now on the Japanese-made batteries, with no indication the APU - built by United Technologies Corp's Pratt & Whitney - was involved, said a person familiar with the government probe, who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the FAA in Washington, said she could not comment as the issue was part of the investigation.

Mark Rosenker, a retired Air Force two-star general who served as chairman of the NTSB under former President George W. Bush, said U.S. investigators, Boeing experts and the battery maker were conducting a meticulous investigation of what caused the lithium-ion batteries to fail. "This is a very complex issue that has tremendous ramifications."

He said Boeing conducted over 1.3 million hours of testing before deciding the lithium-ion batteries were safe to use on the 787, and the company had to satisfy additional rigorous tests to be granted "special condition" by the FAA for use of the batteries.

"I don't believe there was corner cutting in any way," he said. "I believe the FAA has done a good job in its certification process. And Boeing is a very formidable and extremely careful airplane manufacturer. You don't survive in this business by not making safe, efficient and reliable planes."

BIGGEST MARKET

Regulators in Japan said it was unclear when the Dreamliner could be back in the air. Japan is the biggest market so far for the 787, with ANA and JAL operating 24 of the 290-seat wide-bodied planes, which have a list price of $207 million.

Separately, the country's transport ministry said a fuel leak on a JAL-operated 787 last week was due to a malfunction in a drive mechanism that controls a valve. It said the British company that makes the valve was investigating. The ministry declined to name the firm.

Keeping the 787s on the ground could cost ANA alone more than $1.1 million a day, Mizuho Securities calculated, noting the Dreamliner was key to the airline's growth strategy.

ANA said on Friday it cancelled 44 domestic flights and 8 international flights scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, affecting more than 8,000 passengers. JAL earlier cancelled 8 Dreamliner flights on its Tokyo-San Diego route until January 25.

Australia's Qantas Airways said it cancelled an order for one of 15 Dreamliners earmarked for its budget arm Jetstar. The carrier said the decision to cancel the order was taken late last year, before the plane's recent problems. Qantas has options to order 50 of the new generation aircraft.

BAD BATCH?

The JTSB has said the battery on the ANA flight that made the emergency landing was blackened and carbonized, had a bulge in the middle and weighed 5 kg less than normal.

The use of new battery technology is among the cost-saving features of the 787, which Boeing says burns 20 percent less fuel than rival jetliners using older technology.

Hans Weber, president and owner of TECOP International Ltd, a San Diego-based aviation consulting firm and former adviser to the FAA, said it was possible the incidents could be the result of a bad batch of batteries - as was the case with General Motors' Volt electric car, where fires were blamed on a defective batch of batteries supplied by A123 Systems, which has since gone into bankruptcy.

"These batteries require great care in manufacturing and the process needs to be highly automated so you can afford them. A123 had to pull back lots of batteries and that put them under," Weber noted.

"We have to consider the suppliers were at one time producing a lot of equipment for the 787 and then everything got delayed, so some of the stuff they built has been sitting on the shelf for a while. Some of these might have been produced early in the production process and there may have been some deficiencies in the production process."

The 787 represents a leap in aircraft design, but the project has been plagued by cost overruns and years of delays. Orders for the Dreamliner last year helped Boeing overtake rival Airbus as the world's largest manufacturer of passenger jets.

"This could turn out to be a minor technical problem, but the FAA has turned it into a significant marketing challenge for Boeing," said Loren Thompson, defense consultant and chief operating officer of the Lexington Institute, a Virginia-based think tank.
