Mayor Rob Ford used the plagiarism scandal around former Toronto District School Board education director Chris Spence to hit back for an old election wound.
?He shouldn?t be plagiarizing number one, and I think there should be major sanctions,? Ford said on his way into his executive committee meeting Thursday ? a few hours before Spence resigned.
Spence quit a day after he apologized for plagiarizing parts of an op-ed he wrote in a Toronto newspaper earlier this month and in the wake of media outlets finding more examples of possible plagiarism by Spence in other op-eds and an online blog.
?You can?t be the director of education and plagiarizing,? Ford said.
The mayor admitted he?s not a big booster of Spence.
?I?ve never been a fan of Chris Spence,? he said. ?Obviously, this goes back a few years ago during the campaign.?
Spence was quoted in a 2010 Toronto Star story confirming the then-mayoral candidate had a dispute with a student in 2001 while coaching football at Newtonbrook Secondary School.
?Something did happen and they decided that he was no longer welcome to coach at Newtonbrook,? Spence told the Star in July 2010.
Several councillors also took a dim view of Spence?s plagiarism.
Doug Ford said Spence had to call it quits.
?The right thing to do is step down and show proper leadership,? Ford said. ?Let?s get a leader that doesn?t plagiarize.?
Shelley Carroll ? a former trustee and TDSB chairman ? said the best thing to do would be to step down.
?It is very unfortunate,? Carroll said. ?My concern is he has a very out there, motivational, Tony Robbins-almost style of leadership. The credibility to continue to exercise that style is just gone now.
Michael Thompson called Spence?s plagiarism ?wrong.?
?If it was myself in that particular predicament, I don?t see how you can actually provide leadership,? he said.
Should Chris Spence be fired over the plagiarism scandal?
